Lest We Forget...Respect the Past - Celebrate the Present - Look to the Future...
Happy Veterans Day we thank all of our Veterans for our FREEDOM!
God Bless you all,
Shea and Mercer
On November 11, 1999 Terry Kelly was in a Shoppers Drug Mart store in Dartmouth , Nova Scotia . At 10:55 AM an announcement came over the store's PA asking customers who would still be on the premises at 11:00 AM, to take Two minutes of silence in respect of the veterans who have sacrificed so much for us.
Terry was impressed with the store's leadership role in Adopting the Legion's "two minutes of silence" initiative. He felt that the store's contribution of educating the public to the importance of remembering was commendable.
When eleven o'clock arrived on that day, an announcement was again made asking for the "two minutes of silence" to commence. All customers, with the exception of a man who was accompanied by his young child, showed their respect.
Terry's anger towards the father for trying to engage the store's clerk in conversation and for setting a bad example for his child was later channeled into a beautiful piece of work called, "A Pittance Of Time". We hope you all will find it to be a moving video and song.

It’s NOVEMBER the beginning of 2 woofderfully busy months! Many things go on in November and December so we are just going to paw around with November and woof about everything we can think of, you all bark in anytime you think of something to woof about!
Well now let me start woofing, today, November 1st is All Saints Day and tomorrow, November 2nd is All Souls Day. Does anyone know anything about these two special days that they will share with our bloggers?
Tomorrow, November 2nd is also the day in 1947 that the Spruce Goose took to the air and also the water on its first flight. Some questions for our trivia buffs . . . get ready to woof out . . . Who flew the Spruce Goose? What was this airplane made of? How many flights did it take? What does maiden flight mean? How far did the Spruce Goose fly?
On November 3rd the Sputnik sent 2 Dogs into space in 1957. Here is your trivia . . . . Name the dogs and woof about what Sputnik was!!

Woof, November 4th is Election Day! Here are your trivia questions . . . How many candidates are trying to be elected to the office of President of the United States (hint…it is more than just 2) of America and who are they? How old must a person be to vote? May anyone living in the United States vote, why or why not? How many Presidents have we had so far in the United States? Woof I could go on and on, do you all have any Election trivia?
Now let me woof about Veterans Day. This is a holiday honoring our military veterans. It is both a federal and state holiday and is observed on November 11. If November 11th falls on a Saturday, Veterans Day is celebrated on Friday the 10th and if Veterans Day falls on a Sunday it is observed on Monday the 12th of November. Okay now here is your trivia . . . What was Veterans Day also called? I’m pawing around for 2 names that it used to be known as in America, any clues? Now here is a real tough one, ready? Veterans Day also marks the formal end of World War I, at what time, on what day and in which month was the “treaty” signed and why is that important to the date Veterans Day is celebrated?
Most importantly, if you are able to express yourself freely, go wherever you and your family desire to go, vote freely for a candidate of your choice and thousands of other things most of us never think of, you need to thank a veteran for protecting you and those freedoms. Not just on Veterans Day but EVERYDAY!!!!
Shea and I honor our Veterans. Thank you for all you have done for our freedom, God Bless each of you!
Woof, I have many other things to paw about but this is getting long so I will add more soon. Stay pawed in for Thanksgiving trivia!
Paws 2 u 4 now,
Mercer

Woof everyone! Did u know that on October 14, 1947 a man named Chuck Yeager, who was a World War II fighter pilot, became the first person to fly faster than the speed of sound? He broke the “Sound Barrier” in his plane. Does anyone know what the sound barrier is and how fast he had to travel to break the barrier?
Now my next topic, Halloween. . . What is everyone going to dress up as for your trick or treat fun? What type of candy are you going to give out at your house and how many of your treats are you going to share with your pets? Remember, we can’t eat chocolate but we do love a treat or 2, just like you!

Paws to everyone!
October, he tenth month of the year has 31 days.
When we used the Roman Calendar, October was the eighth month of the year. When the January/ February pair of months were added to the calendar, October became the tenth month of our year. The name October came from the Latin word ‘Octo’ which means eight.
Oh woof how I love October!! It is one of the most beautiful months of the year. All of the autumn colors are coming to life and there is a woofderful smell in the air! Now, let me tell you about some of the pawtastic things that happen in October . . . other than those GR88888 events Rose shared, thanks so much Rose, I am going to have to make you an honorary blog pawmaster!
Let me see . . . yes, how many of you have been to Disney World? October 1, 1971 (Yes, Sylvia and Emily, you were right on with the date) was the first day of operation for this woofderful theme park and on October 3rd 1955 the very first Mickey Mouse Club began on ABC. The Mickey Mouse Club was created by Walt Disney. Has anyone ever heard of Walt Disney?
October 4, 1957 is believed to be the beginning of the space age because the first satellite was launched. This satellite was called the Sputnik. Does anyone know which country launched the Sputnik?
Also, on October 4th 1927 work began on the face of Mount Rushmore, in the Black Hills National Forest of South Dakota, by sculptor Gutzon Borglum. It took many years for the images, carved in granite, to be completed. I wonder if anyone knows the names of the four United States Presidents that are on the face of Mount Rushmore.
On October 31, 1941 the Mt. Rushmore sculpture was completed after Gutzon Borglum and 400 stone masons sculpt the colossal 60-foot carvings of U.S. presidents. The project represent the first 150 years of American history
Now let me see, I know that in October, in the United States, we celebrate Columbus Day honoring that woofderful explorer that did not discover America! We also celebrate Boss’s Day (October 16th) and our Canadian friends celebrate their Thanksgiving Day holiday. United Nations Day is October 24th while Mother-In-Law Day is October 28th! One of the biggest event in October, the one that has my tail wagging, is Halloween. In the United States children and many adults dress in costumes and go “trick or treating” for candy, door to door. Does anyone know how Halloween got started in America?
October is also Hispanic Heritage Month, Vegetarian Awareness Month, Hunger Awareness Month, Family History Month and Computer Learning Month
Enough about October, what do u all like to do in the autumn months????
Paws 2 u 4 now,
Mercer!

Hello blogging friends! I just love reading all of your comments! I haven't gotten any books on tape yet, Rose, but I am trying to keep my mind active. I've been writing in my journal a lot lately, I'm working on a few projects! And Max, Mercer, and Molly are ALWAYS busy, which, of course, keeps me busy!
Jess, what were the history projects on? I love the idea of an Oreo project? I would love to hear more about that one, too!
The other day, my Daddy and I were watching Star Wars (more on that later) and you know how in the beginning the stuff you have to read goes by and then into space? Well Mr. Mercer here chose that time exactly to jump up on my bed and lay across me so my sight was limited to black furriness! You are heavier than you look sweetie, but I love you! And, of course, I know he feels he didn't get his fair share of popcorn! He never does but remember he has to keep a steady weight! Still it seems unfair though, huh Merc?
Anyway, I'll tell you (don't laugh now!) I have watched a Star Wars movie everyday for the past week. Sure, I've always been "nah I don't like sci-fi" or "no I never got into that type of stuff" - sure! I'm officially addicted, and officially a Harrison Ford fan. But, come on, at least I'm not like that guy on Dr. Phil who wants to be buried in a storm trooper suit!
When I'm not movie watching, there's always TV which may turn our brains to mush! I recommend turning on The Animal Planet or the History channel - there's some good stuff on those two channels! Don’t forget there is always my books and reading. That is really the best, what is everyone reading right now?
Enough for now,
Love,
Shea

Woof everyone, Saturday, September 27, 2008 is the 1 year anniversary for the Marvelous Mercer Website! We have done so much in one year. We have meant some pawtastic people like Ed Helms, Matt Lauer, Meredith Vieira, Al Roker and Taylor Hicks. We have traveled to New York City, many times, to do book signings at FAO Schwarz and to build a partnership with the Build- a- Bear Workshop. We have visited many schools to do book talks. We accepted a nomination for “Kids are Heroes” a website that recognizes pawtastic things that kids do for others. This year Shea was honored to accept an invitation to join the National Press Club, as the youngest person ever to be given this honor. So, as you can see, we have had a busy, busy year all while going to school full time and keeping everyone in the family in line as well as writing our third book due out in February 2009! One of the most important things that Shea has done this year is to raise money through the sale of her books for two charities, SMA (Spinal Muscular Atrophy) and Canine Companions for Independence (CCI). If you go to the front page of our website you will find a link (Shea Assists Two Charities) that you may click to find some woofderful information about these charities and other projects Shea has been involved in this year.
As you can see we have been pawing all over the place but one of the most rewarding things we have been able to do this year is meet and talk with so many GR888888 people both in person and on our blog! We have some woofderfully, pawtastic new friends that we look forward to hearing from each day. We support each other in ways that would have been hard to imagine a year ago. To all of our friends and supporters, thank you for a woofderful year, we look forward to many more; we could not have done any of this without you! God Bless each of you!

Woof everyone and welcome to September! I was sniffing around and found out some pawsome facts about the month of September. Did you know that the flower for the month is the Morning Glory? September also has a woofderful birthstone, the sapphire. In many countries September is the start of a new school year. In the United States some school systems start in August but many begin after Labor Day which is celebrated the first Monday in September.
Woof, what is Labor Day? Well, in America, it is a holiday to honor the achievements of American workers. The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City, but in 1884 the first Monday in September was selected as the official holiday date.
There are many other important dates to remember in September, here are a few I found on the internet when I was pawing around:
- In the United States, Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated from September 15 to October 15.
- In Mexico, Independence Day is celebrated September 16.
- National Grandparents' Day takes place on the first Sunday after Labor Day in the United States and Canada. Don’t forget your woofderful Grandparents, send a card, and give a call, u mean so much to them!
- In the United States, September 11 is Patriot Day, in remembrance of the terrorist attacks on September 11 2001. (Please say a prayer for all of the people lost on this sad day and for their families)
- In Australia, Father's Day is celebrated on the first Sunday of September.
- In Croatian, September is called Rujan, meaning red month (leaves turn red before falling).
- In Czech, September is called záøí, meaning glow or shine.
- In Finnish, September is called syyskuu, meaning autumn month.
- Sept. 30, 1452 The 1st book was printed and published, Johann Guttenberg's Bible
- Sept 20, 1519 Magellan starts 1st circumnavigation of the world (who knows what circumnavigation is?) (Everyone that was in Shea's 6th grade history class should know this answer.)
- Sept. 15, 1620 the Mayflower departs from Plymouth, England with 102 pilgrims (Who knows where the Pilgrams were headed and where they ended up docking?)
- Sept.14, 1814 Francis Scott Key was inspired to write "The Star-Spangled Banner" (Who knows what inspired Key to write the words to his then “poem”?)
What else can you all woof about that happens in September? Any birthdays out there, any special events??? Share your days with us!

Woof everyone, it is the last weekend of summer and the weather, so far, is woofderful! We are planning an outdoor barbeque with some of the family and friends to celebrate a good summer and Labor Day. What r u all going to do this weekend? U know some of my family went to the beach, which is altogether crazy with the large crowds and the problems with the Bay Bridge in Maryland. But, it only took 4 hours to get there rather than 3, so not too bad. School starts on Tuesday for many of our blog friends; I can't wait to hear about your new teachers and classrooms! Remember if you need any homework help give us a holler and we will try to help with any questions.

The surgery took longer than expected but, it went very well. Thank you all for your prayers and good positive thoughts, please keep them coming!

Hey blog pals!
I hope you are having a super day. I have some news to share with you all. On August 4th, that's a week from today, I will be going into the hospital for a ten-hour operation. I have what doctors call "scoliosis". Scoliosis is a curve of the spine that grows more seriously over time. If you were to see a picture of me, it would look like I am slouching heavily to my right, and it is starting to cause me pain in my back side and my leg. The doctors will be working on straightening me out (no pun intended ;-)).
So you will not hear from me from August 3rd to about the 10th,
maybe a bit later. I will cherish any prayers and crossed fingers you all have for me! Our pal Mercer will do an excellent job keeping up the blog and talking with you while I'm away, I know, and I will still be on this week.
I hope you all understand and know I just love seeing your comments and writing to you all everyday!
Hugs and God bless each of you,
Shea
